• How to Avoid Getting a Shonky Building Job

One of the questions I answered briefly recently was about how to avoid getting a shonky job building job done.

I’ve got to say, it steams me up that anyone would end up with a shonky job, so I thought it was worth providing some more information to ensure you get the best results.

In Queensland, builders must be registered with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission, also known as the qbcc.

You can conduct a search via their website using the builders licence number, company or personal name.

Vetting the builder by asking relevant questions and speaking to prior clients is also a must.

Speaking to sub-contractors who have worked with the builder will give you an idea of the standards they personally work to, and how easy it is to work with them.

From a legal viewpoint, it is important you understand the contract you are entering into with the builder.

The qbcc provide this great seven-minute video hosted by Tom Williams (off of Better Homes and Gardens), that focuses on the importance of fully documenting and completing a compliant building contract.

Home Owner Building Guide

No one should have to deal with shonky building!

Ask around to get to know the contractor's reputation and ensure they are someone you can communicate with well.

Ensure you are working with a professional who takes pride in their work, uses quality products and works with rock-solid proven trades people.

You can find answers to other building questions on our Podcast or Blog.
